How to write an Orientation

Now that you have planned your narrative, it is time to start writing your orientation! An orientation is the beginning of a story, in any other type of text, this would be an introduction.

In your orientation you will need to include, Who, When and Where, What, How and Why will come in later. Hint: You will need to use your plan for this bit.

Who

Who, is the main characters in your story. You will need to introduce them in your orientation. This is important, because, otherwise, your readers will not know what you are talking about. It can also be characters who are in the start of your story.

When

It is important that you state what time your story starts, (day or night), and what season it is, (Winter if it is snowing or Summer if it is hot). You don't have to say exactly in your story if it is summer or winter, you can just state that it is snowing or it is boiling hot.

Where

You will need to state where you are at the beginning of the story so that your readers picture what is happening. this will not only be at the beginning of your story, but through the whole story as well.

Example of an Orientation that states everything above:

I was in the jungle, trying to get out, i was lost, and scared. I wanted to be at home, with my family, but instead I'm out here, lost, tired, hungry, feeling like I would never get out. It was a dark and gloomy night and I was lost in the jungle, no food and no water. Obviously, your wondering what I am doing in this jungle, well I can tell you that I wasn't in the jungle on purpose. You see I boarded the wrong plane, I was in England for a business trip. I was going home when I accidently boarded the wrong plane. I don't know how it happened but it did. Anyway, I was feeling so cold, was it Winter here? I don't know. I heard a rustling in the the bushes, I turned to see what it was. There it is again! What is it. Something was behind me, I was scared but I summed up the courage to turn around.

Example of an Orientation that does not state everything above:

I was lost and trying to get out. I wanted to be at home with my family, but instead I am here, lost, tired, hungry, feeling like i would never get out. Obviously you are wondering why I am out here, well I boarded the wrong plane without realising it when I was on a business trip. I heard something behind me, I was scared but I summed up the courage to turn around.

Obviously the first one sounds a lot better.
